Nanohana
Hidden behind an unassuming shopfront not far from Tokyo University of the Arts, Nanohana brings the flavours of Sado Island to the quiet enclave of Ueno Sakuragi.

Originally from Sado Island off the coast of Niigata, chef Tadahiro Ishiduka prepares traditional Japanese cuisine using fresh fish and seasonal produce sourced directly from his hometown.

The standard lunch is luxuriously simple and features sashimi (raw fish) in sesame sauce, along with a handful of flavoursome side dishes. The staff take pride in introducing the various ingredients, allowing you to sample each flavour before preparing a bowl of ochazuke – rice topped with fish and finished with a warm tea broth and toppings.

Also open for dinner, Nanohana is built on a passion for regional produce and is an ever-enticing detour when passing between Yanaka and Ueno Park.
