Tango flows through the retro interior of Milonga Nueva, a Jimbocho kissaten with a classic atmosphere more than six decades in the making.
First opening its doors in 1953, the back-alley hideaway presents a tango-themed take on the old-style coffee houses (kissaten) that have been gradually fading from the Tokyo landscape.
Step inside and you’ll find charcoal-roasted coffee, sweet cakes and world beers joined by a collection of more than 500 records, which provide the soundtrack for quiet reading, casual meetings and an ample dose of people watching.
Yet above all it’s the atmosphere, which extends from the exposed timber beams and brick floors to large wall speakers, that makes this a special destination where you can’t help but linger a little longer.
